Nursing Leadership
At the Nursing Centre we value the significant role that leadership plays in the advance of the nursing profession, and also the individual nurse and their influence on patient and team outcomes. We have received very positive feedback on our leadership programs including:
Prior to this program I did not clearly understand the differences between leadership & management. Since this program I have been able to use 'skills' taught to become and demonstrate leadership to my team. I have introduced 'positive work behaviour' posters to my workplace. I spend more time with individual staff members encouraging their participation. (Nurse Unit Manager, 2009)
Have defined and validated the approach I have felt is the correct approach to leadership which was formed through observation of good and poor previous leaders. Has given me confidence to further develop the skills that I now know is the best approach and was not only guessing and helping I was on the right track. (Nurse Unit Manager, 2009)
Reduced significant isolation as a manager now more connected with other managers across service. Time to reflect and recharge batteries in environment of support of other managers. (Nurse Unit Manager, 2009)
Here's an overview of the types of programs we offer under the banner of nursing leadership.
Leadership for Nurse Unit Managers
The Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) is pivotal to to the performance of the nursing team and patient outcomes. NUMs wear three 'hats' simultaneously: leader, manager and clinician. The Leadership for NUMs programs is both a one-day introductory workshop or a 6-12 month internal program run onsite at your health facility. The program uses the Kouzes & Posner, Leadership Challenge, model as the basis to explore the key leadership tenants required for NUMs to impact positively on the patient, the team and the organisation.

Emotional Intelligence for Leadership Development
Our preferred provider of Emotional Intelligence for Leadership Development is GENOS International. They define emotional intelligence is:
'Emotional intelligence refers to a set of skills that define how effectively you perceive, understand, reason with, and manage your own and others’ feelings, emotions, and mood state. Our moods, feelings, and emotions influence us every day at work – to good or bad effect. Not only do they impact every workplace relationship and interaction, they influence fundamental areas like job satisfaction, engagement, and team morale. Not surprisingly, then, emotional intelligence underpins how well employees get along, which has tremendous consequences for how well (or not) business gets done. In fact, research shows that emotional intelligence is one of the strongest predictors of professional success, or lack thereof.'

Reigniting the Spirit of Caring
Health care has never been more challenging. Complex economic demands, the changing workforce, technological advances and ethical dilemmas are daily realities. Health care professionals struggle with questions such as: What happened to caring as the essence of our work? Where do patient and family needs fit in? How do I know I’m doing the right thing? What is the meaning of my practice? Where is the joy in my work? How do I work with my colleagues toward a common goal?
Reigniting the Spirit of Caring (RSC) is a three-day seminar that grounds and renews care providers and their managers in understanding the complex dimensions of caring. The focus of the program is gaining and deepening understanding of caring as a knowledge-based and intentional intervention for healing. Participants gain insight and deepen their knowledge and skills in how to care for themselves, each other, and patients and families.
